The Pioneer Zephyr is a diesel-powered railroad train formed of railroad cars permanently articulated together. Built in 1934 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q), commonly known as the Burlington. The train featured extensive use of stainless steel, was originally named the Zephyr, and was meant as a promotional tool to advertise passenger rail service in the United States. The train is generally regarded as the first successful streamliner on American railroads. U-505 is a German Type IXC U-boat built for Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was captured by the U.S. Navy on 4 June 1944. In 1954, U-505 was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois. She is now one of four German World War II U-boats that survive as museum ships and, just one of two Type IXCs still in existence. In 1989, U-505 was designated a National Historic Landmark. Grumman designed the versatile Albatross to meet a U.S. Navy requirement for an amphibious utility aircraft, which could also operate from snow and ice with skis. The HU-16 on display was one of the last operational USAF Albatrosses. The aircraft established a world altitude record for twin-engine amphibians when it reached 32,883 feet on July 4, 1973. Two weeks later, the aircraft was retired and flown to the museum.
